Home is where the Hearth is

The hearth is technically defined as ‘the area in front of the fireplace’. So we are going to refer to the ‘hearth’ in this blog post as just that, but it might also extend to a simple corner of your living room in the instance that you don’t have an actual fireplace to work with because hey- there are no rules!  After all, it’s the holiday season, and gatherings are where memories are made, whether the space is small or large, fireplace or not.

So where do you start on decorating the hearth? We’ve got a few ideas.

Rugs

A perfect scene that you might find on pinterest is a square fireplace with a circular rug in front. We do love the idea of the contrasting shapes. But a circular rug can be limiting as well, so you can also consider a large rectangle that will fit all of your furnishings. Either way, choose a material or pattern that suits your room scheme.

Candles

We can’t deny there’s nothing like the ambiance that a cackling fire in the fireplace produces, but for those of us that aren’t lucky enough to have a fireplace, the use of candles can aid in setting the mood. We love these marble candle holders that add an elaborate elegance to any space. Another great option is hanging elegant wall sconces for added light.

You can also surround yourself with a scent that’s pleasing to you with a candle, the plus side is that you can change it up with the seasons. For the holidays, we love Klaene Gray’s ‘hearth’ scent which combines orange, cinnamon, clove, frasier fir and pine notes.

Cozy Seating

There’s nothing like curling up in a chair with a good book, with either the fire cackling or the aroma of scented candles around. Find the right chair based on your overall living room style. This leather lounge chair is ideal for a modern rustic room, and tend to be a hit with the men.

For an elegant, more formal setting, arrange the furniture around the hearth, facing each other. Timeless chairs make a statement and a slipcovered sofa adds a softer touch and is ideal for year round designs. And after the guests leave, it's the perfect place to sprawl out on your own.

Blankets and throws

Get even more comfortable in your seat by adding a cozy blanket to snuggle under. A little texture goes a long way. Knotted throws and furry stools keep things cushy and layers of patterned pillows are easy ways to get snug. Consider yourself lucky if you have a built in banquette on each side of the mantel!

his tip is beneficial for those that are working without a fireplace.. For a little more warmth and luxury, grab the Bella Notte quilt from the bedroom or a Matteo thermal throw.

Tabletop Lamp

While the soft subtle flow of fire is soothing to all, it’s not necessarily soothing to our eyes , so consider adding a table lamp to achieve the perfect ambiance. Our favorite tabletop lamp is the Hibiscus. The translucent glass base adds a contemporary flair that works with all styles and the glass will reflect the fire light.

And after you're all set up with a chair and a blanket, and a lamp, it's time to curl up with a good book! Choose something uplifting and meaningful.

What’s your favorite way to cozy up the hearth?

5 Reasons We Love Cisco Brothers

We tend to pay attention to healthy ingredients when it comes to our food, but sometimes forget about how things might be affecting us in our home. Healthy materials are the foundation for a healthy home. Cisco strives to use the finest methods and most responsibly sourced, all-natural ingredients in the furniture that they produce. Comfort and safety are carefully balanced with style and structure to define a unique collection. Read on for 5 of the most notable things in Cisco's production process.

In addition to supporting the American economy and sticking to fair labor and safety standards, another reason for purchasing American made product is the environment. Cisco Brothers, based in Los Angeles, is keeping the world a little cleaner for future generations while also setting up relevant jobs.

Is sustainability important to you? The backbone of Cisco's furniture is the sturdy construction and framing made entirely of FSC Certified wood. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is the best indicator that the wood is coming from a responsibly managed forest, following strict guidelines regarding environmental impact and workers rights.

When you customize a piece of Cisco furniture, you can choose everything from the fill to the cushion to the fabrics that cover it. Cisco has a range of options for every preference, taste or budget. Fills and fabrics are sourced from farms as a by-product to other industries and washed in biodegradable emulsifiers and environmentally friendly detergents.

There's more to environmentally-friendly stains and finishes than meets the eye. Unfortunately, many finishes contain harmful petroleum and chemical-based solvents that emit volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which compromise your home’s indoor air quality and damage your health when inhaled. Cisco Brothers offers a plant-based natural oil stain for wood finishes on your furniture.

8-Way Hand Tied is the most intricate seating support systems available and the most comfortable. At Cisco Brothers, all 8-way support systems are hand tied into a hardwood frame to ensure they never squeak or rust, giving you more for your money.

How we do Lee.

Seeing as Lee Industries is supporting local businesses this week nationwide with their Lee Loves Local campaign, we thought we'd share how we support Lee. The company's sustainable strategies include using FSC-certified wood for frames, water-based soy finishes, recycled filling for cushions, and organic upholstery fabrics. Aside from the furniture BEING good, it also LOOKS good. Take a tour of our Encinitas showroom, post floor move, and get styling ideas for your very own 'Lee living' area.

The Lee Apartment sofa is perfect for tight spaces. With a clean, modern shape, we love it with a slipcover for a casual, not to mention easy to clean look. Don't forget to add your own 'I Love Lee' sign.

The Lee Series Sectional just happens to be our most 'sat upon' piece in the store. It screams comfort with its soft graphite upholstery, which of course can be customized to your style. Concrete tables and a jute rug give it a natural feel, while ethnic pillows and our lily pad leaves add an exotic touch.

If you're looking for slip covered chairs in your dining room, which we can't recommend enough (hello red wine spills!), here we mix and match the zipper chair and the hostess chair at a warm wood table. An oversize chandelier and botanical centerpiece give it the Gardenology look;)

For a more classic look, the Roll Arm Sofa accented with embroidered pillows in coastal hues gives a room that West Coast casual look. And who doesn't love a gallery wall behind a sofa with your favorite memories and inspirations.

The Ferris Chaise, another attention-grabber on our floor, is styled here for more of an industrial open space, but can add comfort and a look to any room.

The deep seat and low, rolled arm of the Lee English Arm sofa make it a popular choice for interior designers. It mixes well with any style and gives the room a relaxed and comfortable feeling. We featured it with an elegant chandelier and wall accent mirrors, and rustic counterparts like the leather chair and wooden coffee table.

And last but not least, we kept the Boxy Chair boxy with a rectangular shelf and a corner spot.

Don't forgot to come by this Saturday for our Lee Loves Local event featuring local Calligraphy artists, and receive a discount on the Lee pieces featured here!

Create a Welcome Home

Since our 12 days of Giving started today with 20% off furniture, we’re visiting each room with some tips on how to make your holiday gathering more comfortable and memorable for the whole family. Featured below are some of our favorite set-ups and furniture options by Cisco Brothers.

Need that picture perfect moment? Line the kids up on a timeless sofa in their holiday’s finest and create a memory to last a lifetime. Experiment with lighting to create that perfect cozy ambiance.

When it’s time to tear open the presents, make sure everyone has a view. Sectionals are perfect for creating an intimate circle where everyone can see eachother’s smiles and delightful reactions as they open their gifts. And don’t forget to give the room personality by piling on the pillows.

Whether you’re serving turkey, ham or whatever it may be... create a relaxed atmosphere where the conversation will flow over the wine and food. We love to create some excitement before the holiday meal with a gorgeous tablescape of branches, candles and lights.

After dinner when everyone has full stomachs and is winding down, those big comfy chairs are perfect for the adults to continue the dinner conversation while the kiddies will enjoy spreading out their new toys across a big ottoman.

Color of the Month : PASTEL PINK

With breast cancer awareness month being October, we’re picking our fave interiors that feature a soft sheen of pink. We chose tones that convey pink as a sophisticated and warm color. Combined with other pastels it can be soft and feminine, combined with grays and neutrals, it can be classy and chic.

WALLS

To avoid overdoing it and making a room like like a nursery, think about only painting part of the wall, use a colorblock process as seen here. And compliment it with blacks and other sophisticated neutrals.

FURNITURE + ACCENTS

Combined with other pastels, pink can create a glamorous and calming effect. We love the idea of a pouf in such an unconventional color.

Pink furniture can be used beyond Barbie’s dream house. The use of a pink tufted sofa in this image shows just how versatile the color can be. Add a washed pink rug to the picture against whitewashed walls and the overall room has a classic look.

TABLETOP

Pink dishes combined with sleek neutrals give a more mature tea party look. Consider a textured table throw in a blush shade to compliment a floral centerpiece.

Layering Pink linen with shades of taupe, gray and ivory keeps things soft, while veering away from being overly feminine.  We also love a good linen duvet from Bella Notte!

Accent the Space

Accent Tables are a great way to put the finishing touches on a beautiful room. They play an important role by expanding your living room comfort – holding beverages, stacking books, displaying holiday décor or family portraits. Before buying, think about what you need, assess the style of the room, measure the space, and snap some pictures.

THE SPACE

First, examine the space. If you’ve been reading our previous blog posts, then you know our recommendations for using your personality and preferred style as a starting point. Decorate the room first, not around a piece of furniture. Next, evaluate what you have and consider downsizing. Is it sentimental? Then it’s a keeper. Is it cheap? If there’s an option to redo it, then consider that. If not, replace it. It’s surprising how one small change can update the look and feel of the entire room. Add accent pieces after the overall style is chosen. Furniture should be neutral, and the accents are the thing you can change out to make an overall statement.

THE STYLE

Does your room need more texture? A natural element like rough hewn wood or something super-sleek? Traditional, contemporary, eclectic– we are big fans of mixing things up a bit. You can’t get too crazy with accent tables but you can inject a bit of glamour or personality. Or choose something that ties together multiple themes. If you are mixing old and new, think about the balance of the two and which one your coffee table should be.

Do you want it to have a use?  Storage for example. Or pieces with castors provide mobility for entertaining or toys. Lastly, have an awkward space behind a sofa that needs to be filled? That’s where console tables fit right in.

SCALE AND SHAPE

Coffee Tables: What is the correct height? Well, most sources say it should be below the seat height of your furniture. If you have a large, dark, chunky sofa, you don’t want to choose a small dainty cocktail table. Conversely, the table shouldn’t be longer than the sofa-no matter how great you think it is. Is your room cramped or spacious? For small spaces, we would recommend a round or oval coffee table. For homes with children or pets, no sharp edges - make it easy to maneuver around. A large room can handle those mammoth cocktail tables (square or rectangle).

End tables: The number-one question when choosing an end table: How tall should it be? The rule of thumb is that its surface area should generally be equal to or just below the height of the sofa or chair arms. The idea is to make it comfortable to reach for a book, lamp, or beverage. When you have a close enough measurement but are not sure, err on the shorter side.  And every side table does not have to be the exact same height. Nesting tables let you get away with some optional heights. End Tables come in all shapes and we prefer to mix and match. Also think about what needs to be placed on the table. Do you have a table lamp that has a unique base? Make sure it will fit on the tabletop you choose.

And when in doubt, take photos for another point of view, our team at both locations are happy to help!
